Flickr Fun in 10 Easy Steps
Directions: Flickr.com is a photo sharing website where you can upload and share photos. For this assignment you will create a Flickr account, upload digital images to it and create a movie poster for a short story you have recently read in English class. Because this assignment is a multi-step process, please read and follow all directions very carefully.
Now that you have created your Yahoo! ID you are ready to post pictures to a Flickr account.
1. Take a photo with a digital camera or find one online that would be used to publicize the movie version of the short story. Import it into a computer and save it on a flash drive, email it to yourself or burn it on a CD. You need to be able to access the image at school. Make sure you get permission from any person in the photo (especially if they are under 18) to post it publicly online. If you are using an image someone else created, it is proper “netiquette” to give him or her credit when you post it online.
Image Criteria: The primary focus of your image should reflect at least ONE of the following: setting, theme, symbolism, and characterization.
2. Log in the school computer. Locate your image(s) you would like to use for this assignment. Save it on the Desktop so it will be easy to access later.
3. Go to http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/poster.php and scroll down a tiny bit and Click Sign In. Link your Flickr account to the site that will help you make your poster. Click Create New Account, then Ok, I’ll allow, then click Continue. Sign In with your Yahoo! ID, which is your whole Yahoo! Email address.
4. Where it says Choose a file on your computer to upload, click Browse. Look for your image on the Desktop. Click Open.
5. Keep this part of my photo if it must be cropped to fit. Select one of the radio buttons, Choose one of the three style colors. (See preview in image on right), Choose Primary font color, Accent font color and choose Title font and color. There is no preview of this but you can change it later. (Get samples)
6. Create Movie title, Presented by (Your Name), Tag line 1 (Critic Comments) & Tag line 2 (a quote from the story).
7. Acting credits and production credits. Read the suggestion about formatting the font; if you do it this way it creates an authentic look. Choose famous actors to play the characters in your movie and list them. (Ex. starring BRAD PITT as CHARLIE)
8. Add a Rating and Release Date and color. Then click Create. At this point you can Edit, Start Over, Save, Upload to Flickr.
9. When you are satisfied with your poster, click Upload to Flickr, then Continue and OK, I’ll Allow, then Continue again. Title your movie poster. Describe it. (Leave the HTML info that is there already), add a tag for the title of the short story your poster is promoting, then leave the radio button marked Public (this means anyone on the Internet can view your image). Click Upload, then Go to Photostream to see it.
10. Above the picture click Send to Group. * Click the “here” link to search for “Douglas English” and click “Mr. Douglas’ English Classes 07-08”. Now click “Join this group” (on far right) to add the photo to the group pool. Now you can add a comment to your photo. Include your first name, initial and period so Mr. Douglas can give you credit.
* If your photo does not show this option. Click on Organize at the top, drag your image to the box and click Send to Group. Search for Douglas English, Join the group and add the image to the group pool. They may not appear immediately, you will have a chance to check back later.
